ALAN WILLIAMS
ALAN & LOIS WILLIAMS
1963 ALL-STATE IN JUNIOR HIGH IN ARKANSAS
1966 1ST TEAM ALL-STATE IN LOUISIANA
1966 1ST TEAM ALL-DISTRICT IN LOUISIANA
1966 1ST TEAM ALL-PARISH IN LOUISIANA
PLAYED IN FOUR STATE TOURNAMENTS IN BASKETBALL; THREE IN ARKANSAS AND ONE IN LOUISIANA.
INDUCTED INTO THE LOUISIANA COLLEGE-WILDCAT ASSOCIATION SPORTS HALL OF FAME.
In 1963, Alan was one of only 10 players selected for All-State honors in junior high basketball in the State of Arkansas in class “A”.
In 1966 he was chosen on the starting five (5) All-State team in class “B” in Louisiana. [a total of 15 players were named All-State in Louisiana that year.]
In his senior year, Alan generated the following stats:
25.9 ppg 16 rpg 1,036 total points 640 rebounds
Bill Carter, sports columnist in SPORTS TALK reported the following: “If Williams weren’t such an unselfish player and outstanding athlete, he could be averaging over 40 points per game. He’s that good. But he’s not interested in personal statistics; only in his team winning…unlike most 6-5 boys, Williams never plays on the pivot. Most of his time is spent on a wing. ‘I play him some at guard,’ says Bullard, ‘because I think he will play guard in college and I wanted him to have some experience there. He hits real well from outside and is a good passer.”
One newspaper reported: “The rugged Williams, an accurate shooter and aggressive rebounder, was sought by all the Louisiana colleges, plus some in the Southeastern Conference and Southwest Conference.”
Articles relating to Williams’ college career provide the following which give some indication of his prowess as a basketball player. Alan Williams sparks victory over Tulane. “Sophomore Williams, who scored 19 points in all, with some torrid shooting from outside against the Green Wave zone, went to the boards in the final minutes to turn the tide, pulling down six crucial rebounds in the last five minutes…to complete his night, Williams stepped to the free throw line with 18 seconds remaining and his team leading by three points and dropped in two straight. He added two more with three seconds left, after grabbing another rebound…Williams hit seven of 12 from the field, all from long range.”
Laccase, Williams sharp in LC’s 103-83 win over NSC. “…a couple of upstart sophomores named Gary Laccase and Alan Williams…Williams was given a starting assignment four games ago…and was an overnight sensation…Williams went on a spree. He hit three in a row from the outside. His next attempt went into the basket but, somehow, came out. Then he drilled home four straight. Fourteen points, he scored, in less than six minutes.
Williams bests rival Washington 28-16, but LC bows to State [Mississippi State University] 79-69. “Williams was the exception. He was matched with an old Arkansas high school rival, Manuel Washington, State’s senior forward. Al, a 6-4 junior, clearly outshone his friendly rival, out-scoring him 28-16…Williams was little short of sensational as he poured in 13-17 field goal attempts, practically all of them from outside and sank both of his free throws.”
From Louisiana College Sports Hall of Fame 2014. “A four year letter winner for the Wildcats from 1966-1970, Williams finished his career as one of the most well-rounded players in school history, totaling 929 points and 326 rebounds in his career at Louisiana College…his finest season came as a senior during the 1969-1970 season when he scored 409 total points and grabbed 168 rebounds.”
One individual writing in support of his nomination to RHSSHOF said: “Alan is a great supporter of our schools: Lafargue, Charter School in Avoyelles Parish, Menard Christian School in Alexandria, La, and his alma mater, Louisiana College in Pineville, La…he is a born leader who leads by example.”
