KELLY SCOBEY
Kelly Scobey was a 1964 graduate of Greene County Tech who spent 35 years being a coach and administrator at Rector. He first coached boys basketball at Rector in 1968-69 as an assistant to Jess Bucy. From 1969-1976 he was the junior high head coach. From 1974-75 he was the assistant coach under Sam Casey. From 1976-1980 he was the senior high head coach.
His baseball coaching era at RHS included serving as head baseball coach,1968-1980; and assistant coach under Richard Huggins, 1989-1992.
In addition, Scobey served 1980-1993 as the elementary principal and 1993-2003 as the superintendent of schools.
BASKETBALL COACHING HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE THE
FOLLOWING:
~His 1970 junior high team had a record of 22-6. They were CLAY COUNTY CHAMPS; DISTRICT 2-A RUNNER-UP; and STATE SEMI-FINALIST.
~His 1971 junior high team had a 34-4 record. They were CLAY COUNTY CHAMPS; DISTRICT 2-A CHAMPIONS; and STATE QUARTER-FINALIST.
~In 1973 and 1974 his junior team was CLAY COUNTY CHAMPS.
~As assistant High School coach their record was 34-4 .
~In 1977 as RHS head coach he led the team to TOURNEY CHAMPIONSHIPS AT ARKANSAS COLLEGE, CLAY COUNTY, CONFERENCE and his team set a RHS winning streak record at 27-0 before losing in the FINALS OF THE DISTRICT 2-AA. Scobey led the Blackcats to the STATE
QUARTERFINALS; their season record ended at 29-3.
~In 1977 Scobey was selected the 2-AA NORTH “COACH OF THE YEAR”.
~His 1980 team finished as DISTRICT RUNNER-UP and he was selected to the ARKANSAS HIGH SCHOOL ALL-STAR GAME COACHING STAFF.
~In four (4) years as the Rector head basketball coach, Kelly compiled a record of 81-39.
BASEBALL COACHING HIGHLIGHTS
~In 1975 his team was DISTRICT 2-A CHAMPIONS. They finished as STATE SEMI-FINALIST with a record of 16-2.
~In 1976 his team was DISTRICT 2-A CHAMPIONS. They beat Pine Bluff in the State Tourney 11-1. The team lost in the STATE SEMI-FINALS after a
14-game winning streak. The season’s final record was 15-4.
~In 1992 Scobey served as assistant baseball coach under Coach Huggins. The Cougars won the DISTRICT NORTH BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP, the CLASS AA NORTH REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, and the CLASS A ARKANSAS HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. The team finished with a season record of 21-7.
