VICKI ROMINE
Vicki Romine’s high school basketball career might be described by a comment made by her coach during her junior year: “the sensational scoring effort of Romine was an obvious key to the game…”. After setting a school single game scoring record at Arkansas State University, Vicki’s coach said: “Vicki is a super offensive player, and she showed it.” In junior-high, Vicki received trophies for most points and field goal percentage.
As a sophomore against Highland, she got 12 points, six of them coming in the decisive second quarter. As a junior, Romine scored 22 points against Corning in the Clay County tournament. In the next game, against a heavily favored Piggott team, “Junior guard Vicki Romine scored a career high 31 points.” Near the end of the season it was reported that Romine had a total of 319 point and 58 steals. As a junior, Vicki was named to the All-NEA tournament team where she scored 24 points against Harrisburg and 22 points against Highland. In 1983 and 1984 she was 3A All-Conference and All-District in basketball. Again in 1984 she was selected to the All-NEA tournament team. Vicki also excelled in tennis. She and her partner won the conference tourney in doubles qualifying the first RHS team for the State tournament. In 1983 she was the Conference singles runner-up. In addition, she was named the top female athlete of Rector High School through the Women’s Sports Foundation Milky Way Bar All-Star program.
“Romine Fuels Rally as ASU Whips NLU to Share Lead” was the headline in the Jonesboro Sun Sports section February 5, 1987. “Vicki Romine, a junior from Rector, pumped in 30 points, including six of 10 shots from three point range…‘Vicki was unbelievable’ Winters said of Romine, who was 11 of 23 from the field ”. “Romine’s Buzzer Shot Nips Memphis” was the headline. Cromwill reported in the Jonesboro Sun, “With two seconds on the clock, Romine standing some 28 feet from the basket, took an inbounds pass from halfcourt, turned and fired. The horn sounded and Romine’s improbable heave hit the backboard and banked through the net for a 79-77 victory.” Romine had 19 points and was five of 10 from 3-point range. “Romine, Lady Indians Smash School Records” was the next headline. “Vickie Romine scored a school-record 36 points to carry Arkansas State University’s Lady Indians to a record-smashing 110-68 triumph…’. In Janurary of 1988, Romine was five of eight from 3-point range against Alabama at Tuscaloosa. Other collegiate honors include: Gwin Scholar Athlete Award (Womens basketball) Finalist 1988. Ranked 8th nationally in womens basketball 3pt. fg. shooting.
